On Request
Leave Leh by 7:00 AM on the Leh-Srinagar highway. The drive passes through Sham Valley, the lunar landscape of Lamayuru (one of Ladakh's oldest monasteries, worth a 20-minute stop), and the Mulbekh Chamba - a 9-meter Maitreya Buddha statue carved into a rock face in the 8th century. Cross Fotu La (13,478 ft) and Namika La (12,198 ft) before descending into Kargil (8,780 ft) by late afternoon. Kargil is a practical stopover town, not a scenic destination - it's the administrative gateway to the Zanskar road. Overnight in a basic guesthouse. This day is about acclimatisation and positioning - the real Zanskar entry begins tomorrow.
Places & Experiences:
Lamayuru Monastery (lunar landscape)
Mulbekh Chamba (8th-century Maitreya Buddha)
Fotu La (13,478 ft) and Namika La (12,198 ft) passes
Kargil town and Kargil War Memorial (optional)
Travel Flow: Early departure from Leh → Lamayuru stop → Mulbekh → afternoon arrival in Kargil → evening at leisure
Overnight: Kargil (basic guesthouse, twin sharing)
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Important: Kargil sits at 8,780 ft - lower than Leh, which helps with acclimatisation. Mobile connectivity works in Kargil (Jio/Airtel). Fuel up here - the next reliable pump is Padum, and it may run dry. Carry cash - ATMs in Kargil are limited and often out of cash.
The longest and most spectacular driving day of the trip. Leave Kargil by 6:00 AM. The road follows the Suru River valley past Sankoo and Panikhar, with close-up views of the Nun-Kun massif (7,135 m) - the highest peaks in this part of the Himalayas. The road climbs to Pensi La (14,436 ft), where the Drang-Drung Glacier comes into view - one of the largest glaciers in the Indian Himalayas, visible directly from the road. Descend into Zanskar Valley. Arrive in Padum (3,660 m) by late afternoon. Padum is Zanskar's administrative capital - basic guesthouses, a few dhabas, a market, and limited mobile connectivity. Walk to the old fort above town before dusk. This is one of India's most remote motorable valleys.
Places & Experiences:
Suru River valley (Nun-Kun massif views)
Pensi La (14,436 ft)
Drang-Drung Glacier (visible from road)
Padum town and old fort
Travel Flow: Early departure from Kargil → Suru valley → Pensi La crossing → Drang-Drung Glacier stop → afternoon arrival in Padum → evening walk
Overnight: Padum (basic guesthouse, twin sharing)
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Important: Pensi La is open roughly late June to early October. Even in season, it can close with early snow or heavy rain - check conditions at Kargil before committing. The road is mostly paved now but crosses remote, uninhabited stretches for hours. No fuel between Kargil and Padum. Padum has limited mobile connectivity (BSNL works; Jio/Airtel patchy). No ATMs in Padum - carry enough cash from Kargil.
A full day. Leave Padum by 6:00 AM. First stop: Karsha Monastery - Zanskar's largest and most important Buddhist monastery, home to over 100 monks of the Gelugpa order, situated on a hillside overlooking the Zanskar River. The views from the terraces are exceptional. Then drive to Stongde Monastery (approx. 2 hours from Padum) - perched on a rock promontory at 3,800 m, reached by a steep climb, with panoramic views of the valley. If time allows, Sani Monastery - believed to be one of the oldest Buddhist sites in Ladakh - is a short detour. Begin the return drive over Pensi La by early afternoon. Arrive in Kargil by late evening. Overnight in Kargil.
Places & Experiences:
Karsha Monastery (largest in Zanskar, 10th century)
Stongde Monastery (11th century, 3,800 m)
Sani Monastery (one of Ladakh's oldest)
Pensi La return crossing
Drang-Drung Glacier (return view)
Travel Flow: Early departure from Padum → Karsha → Stongde → Sani → return over Pensi La → late evening arrival in Kargil
Overnight: Kargil (basic guesthouse, twin sharing)
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Important: This is a long day - 8-9 hours of driving plus monastery stops. If you want a slower pace, skip Sani and spend more time at Karsha and Stongde. The Karsha to Padum drive is 15 minutes; Stongde is 2 hours each way. Return to Kargil before dark - the Pensi La road is unlit and rough. No refund for missed monasteries due to time constraints.
Things to Pack:
Clothing: Warm layers - Padum nights are cold even in summer (5-10°C). Fleece, windproof jacket, thermal inners. Sun hat, sunglasses (UV protection), sunscreen SPF 50+. Quick-dry trousers. Modest clothing for monasteries - shoulders and knees covered.
Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes or trail runners for monastery visits and town walks. Sandals for guesthouse.
Travel Essentials: Water bottle (2 litres), ORS packets, energy bars, lip balm, personal first-aid kit including Diamox (consult your doctor first), power bank (limited charging in Padum), torch/headlamp, toilet paper, wet wipes.
Documents: Photo ID (Aadhaar/passport), Inner Line Permit printouts (multiple copies), Leh arrival boarding pass, passport photos (4), travel insurance copy.
Optional: Binoculars, camera with extra batteries, trekking pole, dry fruits, book for no-connectivity evenings.
Best Time to Travel:
Late June to early October is the only reliable window. July and August are peak - the Pensi La road is reliably open, temperatures sit at 10-25°C, and all monasteries are accessible. September is excellent - clear skies, autumn light, fewer crowds. June is marginal - the road is opening but conditions are rough. October is risky - the road closes rapidly and you may get stuck. November to May, Zanskar is inaccessible by road. The Chadar Trek (frozen river) runs January to February only, with a completely different itinerary and extreme cold (-25°C to -35°C).
Suitable For:
Experienced adventure travellers who are comfortable with 8-9 hour driving days, altitudes up to 14,436 ft, basic guesthouse accommodation, and no phone signal for large stretches. Not suitable for first-time India travellers, families with young children, seniors with health conditions, or anyone expecting comfort. This is frontier travel - basic food, limited infrastructure, and real remoteness.
Travel Pace:
Challenging. Two of three days involve 8-9 hours of driving on high-altitude mountain roads. Day 2 includes a 14,436 ft pass crossing. Monastery visits on Day 3 involve short walks on uneven terrain. This is not a relaxed trip - it's a tight 3-day circuit of one of India's most remote valleys.
Accommodation:
Kargil: basic guesthouse (twin sharing, hot water buckets, limited electricity). Padum: basic guesthouse (twin sharing, solar electricity, shared bathrooms in some properties). Do not expect hotel-standard facilities. Upgrades in Padum (Tara Mountain Sarai at ₹15,000-40,000 per night) available on request but limited. The 3-day format uses Kargil as the base on both ends - Padum accommodation is for one night only.
Transport:
Private SUV (Innova/Xylo or similar) - non-AC (AC doesn't work effectively at high altitude). The vehicle is exclusively for your group. The Kargil-Padum road is mostly paved but rough in stretches. Oxygen cylinder carried in vehicle for emergency use. No fuel between Kargil and Padum - fill up in Kargil.
Meals:
Breakfast and dinner included. Lunches are not included - budget ₹300-500 per person at dhabas en route or in Padum. Food in Zanskar is simple - rice, dal, roti, thukpa (Tibetan noodle soup), momos. Vegetarian options are the norm. Carry energy bars, dry fruits, and electrolyte packets for the drives. Alcohol is not widely available - do not carry or consume at altitude.
Important Notes:
Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory for Zanskar Valley. Indian citizens need an ILP since 2017; foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit. Apply through the Leh district administration or online at lahdclehpermit.in. Carry multiple photocopies - checkpoints retain one per post. Your Leh arrival boarding pass may be required with the permit .
Acclimatisation is non-negotiable. Spend 48-72 hours in Leh before starting this trip. Padum sits at 3,660 m - altitude sickness is a real risk. Diamox is recommended (consult your doctor first).
Pensi La opening: The road is open roughly late June to early October. It can close with early snow or heavy rain. Check conditions in Kargil before committing. No refund for itinerary changes due to pass closures.
Fuel: Fill up in Kargil - the next reliable pump is Padum, and it may run dry. Carry cash - no ATMs in Padum.
Mobile connectivity: Kargil has Jio/Airtel. Padum has BSNL (patchy); Jio/Airtel mostly don't work. No signal on the Pensi La stretch.
Medical facilities: The nearest hospital is in Kargil (basic). Padum has a small medical station. Evacuation to Leh or Chandigarh is expensive - travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is strongly recommended.
Fuel and cash: No fuel between Kargil and Padum. No ATMs in Padum. Carry ₹8,000-₹12,000 in cash.
Drone flying requires permission from the Directorate of Civil Aviation, J&K. Zanskar is a sensitive border region - do not fly without permission.
Seasonal Considerations:
June: Road opening. 5-18°C. Access rough but possible. Few tourists. Services limited but starting .
July: Peak. 10-25°C. All monasteries accessible. River rafting season. Book accommodation ahead .
August: Best road conditions. 10-25°C. Dry weather (rain shadow). All activities open .
September: Excellent. 5-18°C. Autumn light, fewer crowds. Last reliable trekking window. Road still passable .
October: Road closing rapidly. 0-10°C. Pensi La getting snow. Last vehicles leaving - urgent exit needed. Not recommended for this 3-day format.
November-May: Inaccessible by road. Chadar Trek (frozen river) January-February only.
Customization:
Extend to 4D/3N or 5D/4N to add Phugtal Monastery trek (2 days from Purne)
Extend to add Zangla village and the ancient king's palace ruin
Add river rafting on the Zanskar River (July-August, ~₹1,500-3,000 per person)
Upgrade Padum accommodation to Tara Mountain Sarai (₹15,000-40,000 per night)
Add a night in Padum to slow the pace
Add a trek from Karsha to Phugtal (4-6 days, separate itinerary)
Start from Leh (not Kargil) with a Leh-Kargil overnight - but this extends the trip

"Yes - Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) since 2017, and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP). Both are handled through the Leh district administration or online at lahdclehpermit.in, along with the Ladakh Environment Fee. Carry multiple photocopies of your permit - checkpoints retain one per post. Your Leh arrival boarding pass must be shown with the permit at checkposts. Apply in Leh before starting the trip."
"The Kargil–Padum road is 240 km and takes 8-9 hours. It's mostly paved now but crosses remote, uninhabited stretches for hours, with a crossing of Pensi La at 14,436 ft. The Drang-Drung Glacier is visible directly from the road. This is a long, high-altitude mountain drive - not for travellers who dislike long car journeys. There is no fuel between Kargil and Padum"

"Yes - Padum sits at 3,660 m, and Pensi La at 14,436 ft. Altitude sickness is a real risk. The most important step is acclimatising in Leh for 48-72 hours before starting this trip. Drink 3-4 litres of water daily, avoid alcohol, and do not push through symptoms (headache, nausea, breathlessness). Diamox is commonly used - consult your doctor before travel. If symptoms don't resolve with rest, descend immediately."
"No. Zanskar is rated extreme difficulty for children - high altitude (3,660 m), extreme terrain, and remote medical facilities. Children are more susceptible to altitude sickness. The nearest hospital is in Kargil (basic). This itinerary is not recommended for families with young children."
