From the palace, walk up to Namgyal Tsemo Monastery, perched on a hilltop above Leh, with sweeping views over the old town and the Stok range beyond . After lunch, explore the Central Asian Museum to understand Ladakh's role on the Silk Road trade routes . The afternoon concludes with a guided walk through Leh's Old Town - a maze of crumbling mud-brick lanes, hidden stupas, and traditional Ladakhi homes that still retain a Silk Road atmosphere .

After Thiksey, drive to Hemis Monastery, hidden in a gorge and the wealthiest gompa in Ladakh, famous for its museum of ancient thangkas and ritual objects . The afternoon brings a highlight: a traditional Ladakhi heritage lunch at Gyab Thago Heritage Home in Stok - a 200-year-old family home where you'll tour the ancient house and enjoy a pure vegetarian Ladakhi meal, beginning with the traditional brew called "Chang" .

Best Time to Travel:
May to September is the window when all routes — including Khardung La and the Nubra Valley - are reliably open and the weather is pleasant. June to August offers warm days (15–25°C) but is peak season. September brings golden autumn light, fewer crowds, and clearer skies - arguably the best month for heritage photography . Winter (October-April) closes most high passes and makes the Nubra route impractical.
Suitable For:
Culture and heritage enthusiasts, history lovers, photographers, and travelers interested in Buddhist art and architecture. Suitable for families and senior citizens comfortable with high altitude (up to 5,359 m at Khardung La) and moderate walking. Not suitable for travelers with serious heart or respiratory conditions.
Travel Pace:
Relaxed to moderate. This is a heritage-focused itinerary with no strenuous treks. Days involve walking through monasteries and villages, but distances are short. Day 4 (Alchi and Lamayuru) and Day 5 (Nubra Valley) involve longer drives but are broken by frequent stops.
Accommodation:
Comfortable hotels in Leh, chosen for proximity to the main bazaar and heritage sites. Options range from standard 3-star to comfortable 4-star properties. Upgrades available on request.
Transport:
Private air-conditioned vehicle for all transfers and sightseeing. Vehicle type depends on group size. Note: air conditioning is not available in vehicles in the Ladakh region .
Meals:
Breakfast and dinner included at the hotel. The heritage lunch at Gyab Thago on Day 3 is included . Lunch on other days is not included - the group will stop at local restaurants or dhabas (own cost). Vegetarian options are widely available.
Important Notes:
Acclimatization is critical. Day 1 is deliberately restful. Do not skip this.
Carry Diamox or consult your doctor about altitude medication before arrival.
Mobile connectivity is patchy outside Leh - Jio and Airtel work in Leh town but fade on highways .
Photography is prohibited inside most monastery sanctums. Always ask before photographing people.
Modest dress is recommended for monastery visits - shoulders and knees covered.
Carry sufficient cash; ATMs are limited outside Leh.
Seasonal Considerations:
June-July: Hemis Festival may fall in this period - a major monastic festival with masked Cham dances .
August: Peak season, warm days, occasional monsoon haze that can reduce visibility.
September: Best month for heritage photography. Golden light, fewer crowds, crisp air .
October onwards: High passes begin closing. Nubra route may become inaccessible.
Customization:
This is a private tour. Itinerary can be adjusted to include additional monasteries (Spituk, Stakna, Likir).
Adding a day for the Hemis Festival (June/July) is recommended if timing aligns .
Upgrading to luxury properties (The Grand Dragon Ladakh, The Indus Valley, Lchang Nang Retreat) is available .

"Leh town and its immediate circuit need no permit for Indian nationals. Inner Line Permits are required for protected areas including Pangong, Nubra, Turtuk, Hanle and Tso Moriri. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for the same regions and generally cannot travel solo there. Requirements are revised periodically -we arrange all permits for guests on our Ladakh packages."
"Rest for a full 24 to 48 hours in Leh before travelling higher. Leh sits at around 3,500 m and flying in from sea level is an abrupt gain. Keep your first day light, drink water steadily, and avoid alcohol and smoking. Ascend gradually thereafter. Any itinerary that sends you to Pangong or Nubra on day one is cutting a corner that matters -ours build acclimatisation in by design."
"May to September is the main season, when the Srinagar-Leh and Manali–Leh highways are typically open and high-altitude areas are accessible. July and August are warmest and busiest. Winter is starkly beautiful but very cold, with road access limited and flights the only reliable route in and out."
"Seven days is a realistic minimum: two in Leh to acclimatise, then Nubra and Pangong with travel days between. Five days is possible but compresses acclimatisation in a way we don't recommend. Nine to ten days lets you add Tso Moriri, Hanle or Turtuk without rushing."
"Flying (IXL) is fastest but gives your body no adjustment time, making rest on arrival essential. Driving via Srinagar or Manali takes two days and lets you gain altitude gradually, which most travellers find considerably more comfortable. If your schedule allows, drive in and fly out -you get the road trip and an easy exit."
"It can be, with the right pacing. Altitude affects everyone regardless of fitness, so longer acclimatisation, shorter driving days and lower-altitude areas like Nubra before Pangong all help. Anyone with heart or respiratory conditions should consult their doctor before booking. Tell us about any health considerations when planning and we'll adjust the itinerary."
