"Official dates are set by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board and are typically announced a few months in advance. The yatra traditionally runs during Shravan -broadly late June or early July through August -for a period of around 45 to 60 days, subject to weather and security conditions. Always confirm against the Shrine Board's official announcement rather than unofficial sources. We update this page as soon as dates are released."
"Registration is mandatory and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with daily quotas for each route. In 2026, advance registration opened on 15 April at over 550 designated bank branches nationwide, using Aadhaar-based biometric authentication, with permits issued online. Pilgrims aged 13 to 70 were eligible, and women more than six weeks pregnant were not permitted. Registration typically opens around April; confirm the current process with the Shrine Board."
"Every pilgrim must submit a valid health certificate issued by an authorised medical institution -including those travelling by helicopter. The yatra reaches altitudes near 3,880 m and involves sustained exertion in cold conditions, so this requirement is taken seriously and is checked. Obtain your certificate from an authorised centre well before your travel date."
"The Baltal route is around 14 km each way: much shorter, but steep and demanding, usually completed as a one or two-day journey. The traditional Nunwan-Pahalgam route runs roughly 48 km over three to four days, longer but gentler in gradient and more gradual in altitude gain. Your permit specifies your route and travel date, so decide before registering. First-timers and older pilgrims often find the Pahalgam route more manageable despite its length."
"Helicopter services operate seasonally between designated base points and Panjtarni, from where a shorter walk or pony ride reaches the cave. Helicopter pilgrims still need registration and a health certificate. Slots are limited and weather-dependent, with cancellations common. See our helicopter yatra package for current availability."
"Considerably. The route involves sustained trekking at high altitude in cold, changeable weather, with the cave near 3,880 m. Begin preparing several weeks ahead with regular walking and cardiovascular exercise. Ponies, Palkis and Porters are available on both routes. Anyone with heart, respiratory or mobility conditions should consult a doctor before registering."
