About this experience

A 5-day, 4-night private Vietnam family tour pairing Hanoi's Old Quarter, street food and water puppets with an overnight cruise on Ha Long Bay's limestone karsts. Private transfers, 4-star or 5-star stays, and a pace built for children - the shortest Vietnam family trip that covers both the city and the bay.

Day by day

Day1

Day 1 — Arrival in Hanoi, Old Quarter Evening Route: Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) → Hanoi city (approx. 35 km, 45-60 minutes)

Arrive at Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) and clear immigration - Indian passport holders need a pre-approved e-Visa, applied online through evisa.gov.vn (approximately $25, 3 working days processing). Your driver meets you at arrivals and drives to your hotel in the Old Quarter or French Quarter (45-60 minutes depending on traffic). Check in and let the family rest. In the evening, walk to Hoan Kiem Lake - the heart of Hanoi, with the red Huc Bridge leading to Ngoc Son Temple on a small island. The area around the lake is pedestrianised on weekends and evenings, and children can run around safely. Dinner at a family-friendly restaurant near the lake - Hanoi has excellent Indian, Vietnamese, and Continental options. This is a soft landing day - Hanoi is hot and humid year-round.

Places & Experiences:

  • Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple

  • Huc Bridge (red wooden bridge)

  • Old Quarter evening walk (36 streets)

  • Water puppet show (optional, Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, ~VND 100,000 per person)

Travel Flow: Afternoon arrival → immigration and transfer → hotel check-in → evening Hoan Kiem Lake walk → dinner

Overnight: Hanoi (4-star or 5-star hotel - double/twin sharing)

Meals: None

Important: Vietnam e-Visa is mandatory for Indian passport holders - apply at least 3 working days before travel through the official portal (evisa.gov.vn). The e-Visa is valid for 90 days with multiple entry. Carry a printout of your e-Visa, passport (6+ months validity), return ticket, hotel confirmation and proof of funds. For a family of 4+, we use an SUV or a Toyota Innova-sized vehicle - confirm vehicle size at booking.

Day2

Day 2 — Hanoi City Tour, Street Food and Water Puppets Route: Hanoi → Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum → Temple of Literature → Old Quarter → Hoan Kiem Lake

A full day in Hanoi. Start at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex (exterior - the mausoleum itself has limited opening hours and long queues) including the Stilt House, Presidential Palace, and One Pillar Pagoda. Then the Temple of Literature - Vietnam's first university, founded in 1070, with peaceful courtyards and pavilions that children enjoy exploring. Lunch at a local restaurant - try pho (noodle soup), bun cha (grilled pork with noodles), and fresh spring rolls. Afternoon: a cyclo ride through the Old Quarter (approx. VND 200,000 per person for 30-45 minutes) - the three-wheeled pedicabs are a hit with children. Late afternoon: a private street food walking tour with a guide, sampling safe, kid-friendly street eats (bun cha, banh mi, che dessert) and ending at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre for the evening show. The water puppet show is a 50-minute performance of Vietnamese folk tales - suitable for all ages and a highlight for children.

Places & Experiences:

  • Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex (exterior)

  • Temple of Literature

  • Old Quarter cyclo ride (~VND 200,000 per person)

  • Private street food walking tour

  • Thang Long Water Puppet Show (~VND 100,000 per person)

Travel Flow: Morning mausoleum and Temple of Literature → lunch → afternoon cyclo ride → late afternoon street food tour → evening water puppet show

Overnight: Hanoi (4-star or 5-star hotel)

Meals: Breakfast

Important: The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is closed on Mondays and Fridays and has limited opening hours (usually 7:30-10:30 AM). Dress code is strict - shoulders and knees covered, no shorts, no sleeveless tops. The water puppet show sells out most evenings - book in advance through your hotel or online. Street food tours are best booked as a private tour for families - the guide can tailor the pace and food choices for children

Day3

Day 3 — Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, Overnight Cruise Route: Hanoi → Ha Long Bay (approx. 170 km, 2.5–3.5 hours) → Overnight cruise

Leave Hanoi by 8:00 AM for the drive to Ha Long Bay (2.5-3.5 hours via the Hanoi-Ha Long Expressway). Board your cruise by late morning - check-in is usually 12:30-1:00 PM. Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with nearly 2,000 limestone islands and islets rising from emerald water. Lunch on board as the cruise sails past karsts. Afternoon activities depend on your cruise: visit Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave - large chambers with stalactites and stalagmites, family-friendly), kayaking or bamboo boat rides around floating villages, and swimming at Titop Island (weather-permitting). Evening: cooking demonstration on board, sunset on the deck, and dinner. Overnight in an air-conditioned private cabin. Family-friendly cruises offer activities for children.

Places & Experiences:

  • Ha Long Bay (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

  • Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave)

  • Kayaking or bamboo boat ride

  • Titop Island (swimming, weather-permitting)

  • Cooking demonstration on board

  • Sunset on the deck

Travel Flow: Morning drive to Ha Long → board cruise → lunch on board → afternoon cave and kayaking → evening cooking demo and dinner → overnight on cruise

Overnight: Ha Long Bay (overnight cruise - private cabin, double/twin sharing)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Important: Not all Ha Long Bay cruises are equally family-friendly - some are adult-oriented. Book a cruise with a reputation for families (activities for children, safety rails, family cabins). Sung Sot Cave involves climbing steps - manageable for children 5+ and grandparents with reasonable fitness. Kayaking requires basic swimming ability - life jackets are provided. Ha Long Bay can be stormy May-August - cruises can be cancelled for safety. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Day4

Day 4 — Ha Long Bay to Hanoi, Free Afternoon Route: Ha Long Bay → Hanoi (2.5–3.5 hours) → Hanoi

Early morning: optional Tai Chi session on the sundeck at sunrise (a Ha Long Bay tradition), then continue cruising past more karsts. Visit a floating fishing village or another cave depending on your cruise itinerary. Brunch on board, then disembark by late morning (check-out is usually 9:30-11:00 AM). Drive back to Hanoi (2.5-3.5 hours), arriving by late afternoon. Check in to your hotel and take the rest of the day at leisure. Families with children may want to rest at the hotel or explore the Old Quarter at a slower pace. Evening: dinner at a restaurant of your choice - Hanoi has strong Indian restaurants (Tandoor, Namaste Hanoi) if the family wants a break from Vietnamese food.

Places & Experiences:

  • Tai Chi on sundeck (optional, early morning)

  • Floating fishing village or cave visit

  • Brunch on board

  • Old Quarter evening walk

  • Dinner at a family-friendly restaurant

Travel Flow: Early morning Tai Chi → cruise and cave/village → brunch → disembark → afternoon drive to Hanoi → evening at leisure

Overnight: Hanoi (4-star or 5-star hotel)

Meals: Breakfast, Brunch

Important: Disembarkation is usually by 11:00 AM. The drive back to Hanoi can take longer in peak traffic - plan for 3-3.5 hours. This is a recovery day after the cruise - do not over-schedule. Hanoi's Old Quarter is safe for families, but be careful with children on motorbike-heavy streets - cross slowly and deliberately.

Day5

Day 5 — Hanoi Shopping, Departure Route: Hanoi → Hoan Kiem Lake area → Noi Bai International Airport (HAN)

Check out after breakfast and spend the morning on a final walk around Hoan Kiem Lake or the Old Quarter for last-minute shopping. Hanoi is good for silk, lacquerware, coffee (Vietnamese robusta is excellent), and local crafts. If your flight is in the afternoon, have lunch at a family-friendly restaurant before transferring to Noi Bai International Airport (HAN). International departures recommend arriving 3 hours before the flight - Noi Bai immigration and security can be slow in peak season. With children and luggage, 3 hours is the minimum. Pack liquids in checked luggage.

Places & Experiences:

  • Hoan Kiem Lake morning walk

  • Old Quarter shopping (silk, lacquerware, coffee)

  • Dong Xuan Market (optional, Hanoi's largest market)

  • International departure from Noi Bai Airport

Travel Flow: Morning shopping or lake walk → lunch → transfer to airport → international departure

Overnight: None

Meals: Breakfast

Important: Noi Bai Airport is 45-60 minutes from central Hanoi - allow extra time in peak traffic. Terminal 2 is for international flights; Terminal 1 is domestic. Confirm your terminal at booking. Vietnamese coffee and silk are good souvenirs - buy coffee from a specialist shop (not the airport) for quality. If your flight is before 11 AM, skip the shopping and go straight to the airport.

Hanoi

What to bring

Things to Pack:

Clothing: Lightweight cottons and quick-dry fabrics for Hanoi. One light layer for air-conditioned restaurants and the cruise. Swimwear for Ha Long Bay kayaking (weather-permitting). Modest clothing for the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum - shoulders and knees covered, no shorts, no sleeveless tops. Rain jacket or umbrella (May-August). Comfortable trousers for temple visits.

Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes for Hanoi city tour. Sandals or flip-flops for the cruise and hotel. Water shoes for kayaking (optional).

Travel Essentials: Sunscreen SPF 50+, insect repellent (mosquitoes in Hanoi and Ha Long Bay), sunglasses, power bank, universal adapter (Vietnam uses Type A/C/D, 220V), basic medicines including children's fever and stomach medicine, reusable water bottles, snacks for children.

Documents: Passports (6+ months validity) for all family members including children, Vietnam e-Visa printouts, return flight tickets, hotel confirmations, travel insurance copy, passport-size photos (4 copies), international debit/credit card (Visa/Mastercard).

Optional: GoPro or action camera, dry bag for kayaking, eSIM for Vietnam (Viettel has the best coverage), a good book for the cruise, motion sickness tablets for the Ha Long Bay drive (winding roads), a light stroller for younger children (Old Quarter is stroller-unfriendly but the French Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake area are manageable).

Best Time to Travel:

Northern Vietnam (Hanoi and Ha Long Bay) is best from February to April (spring) and September to November (autumn), with milder weather (18-25°C) and better visibility. March and April are the sweet spot for first-time visitors - mild, sunny, and comfortable for families. May to August is hot, humid, and wet - Ha Long Bay can be stormy and cruises can be cancelled. December to February is cooler (14-20°C in Hanoi), with mist and occasional cold snaps - pack layers. Avoid Tết (Vietnamese Lunar New Year, late January or early February) - many businesses close and transport is packed.

Suitable For:
Families with children aged 5+ who want a mix of city culture and natural scenery. Multi-generational groups (grandparents welcome - the itinerary has built-in rest time). Not suitable for travellers who want beach time (Ha Long Bay is a bay, not a beach destination) or who want a multi-city Vietnam trip (Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta are separate itineraries). If your children are under 5, the itinerary works but some activities (kayaking, cave steps) may need adjustment.

Travel Pace:
Moderate. Day 1 is arrival. Day 2 is a full city day. Day 3 is travel and cruise. Day 4 is cruise and return. Day 5 is departure. This is a compact 5-day trip - two destinations, one overnight cruise. Families with younger children may want to extend by a day in Hanoi.

Accommodation:
Hanoi: 4-star or 5-star hotel in the Old Quarter or French Quarter (double/twin sharing). Old Quarter is best for atmosphere and street food access; French Quarter is quieter and more upscale. Ha Long Bay: overnight cruise with private cabin (double/twin sharing) - mid-range or luxury options available. Upgrades to premium properties (Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, JW Marriott Hanoi) and luxury cruises (Paradise Elegance, Ambassador) available on request.

Transport:
Private AC vehicle for all included transfers and tours. Toyota Innova or similar SUV for families of 4+. The vehicle is exclusively for your family. Hanoi-Ha Long is 2.5-3.5 hours via the expressway. Grab is available in Hanoi for ad-hoc trips but not part of this package. Hanoi's Old Quarter is walkable but motorbike-heavy - hold children's hands when crossing.

Meals:
Breakfast included on all days. Lunches and dinners included on the Ha Long Bay cruise (Day 3). Other lunches and dinners are not included - budget VND 100,000-300,000 per person per meal at local restaurants, or VND 300,000-600,000 at mid-range family restaurants. Hanoi has excellent street food (pho, bun cha, banh mi) at VND 30,000-60,000 per dish, alongside Indian, Vietnamese, and Continental restaurants. Ha Long Bay cruise meals are included and family-friendly. Vegetarian and Jain food is available at Indian restaurants in Hanoi - tell us at booking if you need Jain-specific arrangements.

Important Notes:

  • Visa for Indian passport holders: Vietnam e-Visa is mandatory. Apply online at evisa.gov.vn at least 3 working days before travel. Fee is approximately $25 per person (₹2,360). The e-Visa is valid for 90 days with multiple entry. Carry a printout of your e-Visa. The Embassy of India in Hanoi recommends checking that visa details match passport details before departure.

  • Currency: Vietnamese Dong (VND). ATMs are widely available at Noi Bai Airport and in Hanoi. Cards are accepted at hotels and larger restaurants; street food and markets are cash-only. USD is accepted at some hotels but VND is better for daily use.

  • SIM card: Local SIMs (Viettel, Mobifone, Vinaphone) are available at Noi Bai Airport on arrival - approximately VND 100,000-200,000 for a tourist SIM with 7-15 days validity.

  • Tipping: Not mandatory but appreciated. For drivers and guides, VND 100,000-200,000 per day is standard.

  • Traffic: Hanoi traffic is chaotic - motorbikes dominate. Cross streets slowly and deliberately; do not run. Hold children's hands at all times.

  • Tết (Lunar New Year): Late January or early February. Many businesses close, transport is packed, and prices spike. Avoid if possible.

  • Ha Long Bay weather: May–August is stormy - cruises can be cancelled for safety. Check forecasts and have travel insurance.

  • Family perks: Many Vietnamese hotels offer family perks (adjoining rooms, children's amenities, early check-in) if told in advance - we share your booking as a family at the time of reservation.

Seasonal Considerations:

  • February-April: Best window. Spring - mild (18-25°C), clear skies. March and April are ideal for families. Book 4-6 weeks ahead.

  • May-August: Hot, humid, wet. Hanoi 26-35°C. Ha Long Bay stormy - cruises can be cancelled. Cheaper rates but less reliable.

  • September-November: Second-best window. Autumn - cooler, drier, sunny. September-October are excellent. Book 4-6 weeks ahead.

  • December-February: Cooler (14-20°C in Hanoi). Mist and occasional cold snaps. Pack layers. Tết (late January/February) is peak - avoid.

  • Year-round: Hanoi is hot and humid (except winter). Rain possible any month, concentrated May-August.

Customization:

  • Extend by 1 night in Hanoi for a Bat Trang ceramic village or Duong Lam ancient village day trip

  • Extend by 1 night on Ha Long Bay for a 2-night cruise (visits Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba Island)

  • Add a Sapa extension (3-4 days, overnight train or limousine bus from Hanoi)

  • Add a Ninh Binh day trip (Tam Coc boat ride, Mua Cave)

  • Add a family cooking class in Hanoi

  • Add a private family photoshoot in Hanoi or on Ha Long Bay

  • Upgrade to Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi or JW Marriott Hanoi

  • Upgrade to a luxury Ha Long Bay cruise (Paradise Elegance, Ambassador)

  • Swap Ha Long Bay for Lan Ha Bay (quieter, less crowded, same karst scenery)

"Yes - Indian passport holders need a pre-approved e-Visa. Apply online at evisa.gov.vn at least 3 working days before travel. The fee is approximately $25 per person, and the e-Visa is valid for 90 days with multiple entry. Carry a printout of your e-Visa, along with your passport (6+ months validity), return ticket, and hotel confirmation. The Embassy of India in Hanoi recommends checking that visa details match passport details before departure"

"Yes - but choose the right cruise. Many Ha Long Bay cruises are family-friendly, with activities designed for children (cave visits, kayaking, cooking demonstrations). Some are adult-oriented - tell us at booking that you're travelling with children and we'll match you to a family-friendly cruise. Sung Sot Cave involves climbing steps (manageable for children 5+), and kayaking requires basic swimming ability with life jackets provided. Cruises can be cancelled in stormy weather (May-August)."

"February to April (spring) and September to November (autumn) are the best windows - milder weather (18-25°C), clear skies, and comfortable for families. March and April are the sweet spot. May to August is hot, humid, and stormy - Ha Long Bay cruises can be cancelled. December to February is cooler with mist and occasional cold snaps. Avoid Tết (Lunar New Year, late January/February) - many businesses close."

"Hanoi's street food is a highlight. Family-friendly options: pho (noodle soup - mild, comforting), bun cha (grilled pork with noodles - omit chilli for kids), banh mi (Vietnamese baguette sandwich), and fresh spring rolls. A private street food tour with a guide is the best way to navigate the Old Quarter's stalls - the guide ensures hygiene and tailors choices for children. Indian restaurants (Tandoor, Namaste Hanoi) are also available if the family wants familiar food."

"The drive is 170 km and takes 2.5-3.5 hours via the Hanoi–Ha Long Expressway. It's a comfortable drive in a private vehicle with AC. Most families stop once en route. For children prone to motion sickness, the last stretch into Ha Long can be winding - carry motion sickness tablets. The private car allows flexible rest stops."

"Yes - the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre show is a 50-minute performance of Vietnamese folk tales, with wooden puppets dancing on water, accompanied by live traditional music. It's suitable for all ages, and children find it genuinely entertaining. Tickets are approximately VND 100,000 per person. Book in advance - the show sells out most evenings. It's a good cultural introduction to Vietnam for children"
