Ladakh is the largest of the 10 provinces of Jammu and Kashmir and is bounded by the Karakoram mountain range to the north and the Himalayan mountains to the south. The province, through which the great Indus River flows, is divided into Leh, the capital, Nubra, Zanskar, Lower Ladakh and Rupshu. Ladakh is characterized by its plateaus, rugged, barren rocks and plateaus. Ladakh is dominated by a climate that provides about 50 mm of rainfall each year, and is cold and dry. One is therefore confronted with a long and bitter winter with frozen but still very beautiful scenery, and a short hot summer when the precious glaciers melt.
